Moral assessment:

A 14-year old country girl begins to work as a maid in Paris in 1891. She is brave and hard-working, but her character will soon be put to the test. Her boss has a sinister reputation, and in the mansion they say there are ghosts… The novel has a background of scientific elements in which some questions related to electrostatic activity are discussed (in fact, the book closes with some revealing explanations about this topic and about Faraday himself). Along with this, the young protagonist displays a number of virtues: daring, responsibility, generosity…and a good spirit of scientific inquiry which allows her to reflect on things which others would consider minor or irrelevant. One note: there doesn’t seem to be any need, in the four or five times that God is mentioned, for the word to appear with a small ‘G’. F.J. (2011)
