The story is set in the Jewish community of Ferrara, northern Italy, at the beginning of the Second War, when racial laws begin to discriminate and isolate Jews from society. The main character and narrator is Alberto. He is in love with Micol Finzi-Contini, but she is from a rich family, and she doesn't love him back. There are many virtues in the book, except for a passage (non-descriptive) over a stalk. It was adapted for film by Vittorio De Sica in 1971.
