Charcoal Joe is the 14th installment in the hard-boiled African American private detective Ezekiel “Easy” Rolins book series. The action is set in LA in the late 60s, a time of racial tension. Easy has set up a new detective agency and is about to propose to his girlfriend when he is hired through a friend by Rufus Tyler, an old gangster who goes by the name of Charcoal Joe and wants Easy to prove the innocence of his nephew Seymour, a bright physics post-doc who has been arrested and charged with murder. This could have been an entertaining read were it not marred by a number of short but rather sexually explicit passages that make the book qualify as soft porn.
