The book contains a selection of the best cases of Detective Max Carrados and his partner Carlyle. They were published starting in 1910 by Ernest Bramah, under the pseudonym of Ernest Brammah Smith (1868–1942). The stories are developed within the Edwardian tradition and highlight the deductive skills of the protagonist.
