Bird is an expert travel journalist, with some trips illustrated by her photographs. She was the first woman chosen by the Royal Geographical Society. She toured Australia, Hawaii, Japan, China, Vietnam, Holy Land, Persia, Kurdistan, Tibet, Manchuria, and finally Korea and Morocco... This book contains the memoirs of her expedition to Colorado (USA) in 1878, in 17 long letters written to her sister in Scotland, in which she vividly recounts her experience of a solitary journey, most of the time on horseback, through a recently conquered American West and at the height of the gold rush. The book reflects the enormous power and personality of its author, and her unblemished faith (she was the daughter of a Protestant pastor). It contains excellent descriptions of landscapes, and a careful observation of nature, along with moments of dramatic intensity. The Spanish translation loses some of the style and freshness of the original. F.J. (Spain, 2015)
